Dr. Nilesh Sonawane, Pulmonologist & General Physician at Dr. Sonawane Clinic, Ravet, was quoted as an expert in this Mid-Day feature on how poorly maintained air conditioners can trigger respiratory infections, dry airways, and worsen chronic lung conditions like asthma and COPD — especially during Indian summers.

Quick Lung Health Tips

Breathe through your nose, not your mouth — the nose filters, warms, and humidifies air

Stay well hydrated — 8 glasses of water a day keeps mucus thin and easier to clear

Sleep on your side if you snore — it reduces airway collapse during sleep

Avoid strong perfumes, incense, and room fresheners if you have asthma

Do not stop inhalers when you feel better — continue as prescribed

Keep a symptom diary — note triggers, timing, and severity to share with your doctor

Practical, evidence-based guidance on managing your lung health

Breathing Tips
Pursed Lip Breathing: A Simple Technique That Works

Pursed lip breathing slows your breathing rate, keeps airways open longer, and helps release trapped air in the lungs. Ideal for COPD and asthma patients during breathlessness episodes.

  • Relax your neck and shoulder muscles
  • Breathe in slowly through your nose for 2 counts
  • Pucker your lips as if you are about to whistle
  • Breathe out slowly through pursed lips for 4 counts
  • Repeat 4–5 times whenever you feel breathless
Inhaler Use
Are You Using Your Inhaler Correctly?

Studies show that up to 70% of patients use their inhalers incorrectly, significantly reducing the medication's effectiveness. Here is the correct technique for a metered-dose inhaler (MDI).

  • Shake the inhaler well for 5 seconds
  • Breathe out fully to empty your lungs
  • Place the mouthpiece between your teeth — seal your lips around it
  • Press the canister once as you begin to breathe in slowly
  • Continue breathing in slowly for 3–5 seconds
  • Hold your breath for 10 seconds, then breathe out slowly
  • Wait 1 minute before taking a second puff if prescribed
Lung Health
How Air Pollution Affects Your Lungs in Pimpri-Chinchwad

Pimpri-Chinchwad is one of Maharashtra's most industrialised cities. Vehicle exhaust, construction dust, and factory emissions contribute to rising rates of asthma, COPD, and lung infections. Here is how to protect yourself.

  • Check the Air Quality Index (AQI) daily before outdoor activity
  • Wear an N95 mask on high-pollution days (AQI > 150)
  • Avoid outdoor exercise during peak traffic hours (7–10 AM, 5–8 PM)
  • Keep windows closed on high-pollution days; use air purifiers indoors
  • Plant air-purifying indoor plants (spider plant, peace lily)
  • Get annual lung function tests if you live near industrial areas
Smoking Cessation
Quitting Smoking: What Happens to Your Lungs Over Time

The moment you quit smoking, your body begins to repair itself. Here is a timeline of lung recovery after quitting — and why it is never too late to stop.

  • 20 minutes: Heart rate and blood pressure drop
  • 12 hours: Carbon monoxide levels in blood return to normal
  • 2 weeks–3 months: Lung function begins to improve
  • 1–9 months: Coughing and shortness of breath decrease significantly
  • 1 year: Risk of coronary heart disease is halved
  • 10 years: Lung cancer risk drops to half that of a smoker
Sleep & Breathing
Sleep Apnoea: The Silent Breathing Disorder

Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) causes repeated breathing pauses during sleep, leading to poor sleep quality, daytime fatigue, and increased risk of heart disease. It is often undiagnosed.

  • Warning signs: loud snoring, gasping during sleep, morning headaches
  • Risk factors: obesity, large neck circumference, nasal congestion
  • Diagnosis: overnight sleep study (polysomnography)
  • Treatment: CPAP therapy, weight loss, positional therapy
  • Untreated OSA raises risk of hypertension, stroke, and diabetes
  • Consult Dr. Sonawane if your partner notices breathing pauses during your sleep
AC & Respiratory Health
Is Your Air Conditioner Making You Sick?

As featured in Mid-Day (World Health Day 2026), Dr. Nilesh Sonawane explains how air conditioners — when poorly maintained — can trigger respiratory infections, dry airways, and worsen asthma or COPD. Understanding AC hygiene is essential for lung health in Indian summers.

  • Clean or replace AC filters every 2–4 weeks during heavy use
  • Set AC temperature between 24–26°C — extreme cold dries the airway lining
  • Use a humidifier alongside AC if you have asthma or chronic dry cough
  • Avoid direct cold air blowing on your face or chest while sleeping
  • Service the AC unit at least once a year to prevent mould and bacteria buildup
  • If you develop a cough, sore throat, or breathlessness after AC use — consult Dr. Sonawane
Vaccinations
Vaccines Every Lung Patient Should Have

Respiratory infections can be life-threatening for patients with asthma, COPD, ILD, or diabetes. Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to prevent serious lung illness.

  • Influenza (flu) vaccine: annually, especially before monsoon season
  • Pneumococcal vaccine (PCV13 + PPSV23): for COPD, asthma, and diabetics
  • COVID-19 booster: recommended for all chronic lung disease patients
  • Tdap (whooping cough): for adults who missed childhood vaccination
  • Consult Dr. Sonawane before vaccination if on immunosuppressants
  • Keep a vaccination record and bring it to every appointment
